Product Overview

Our White Oak soap dish extends the life of your favorite natural and organic soap by allowing it to dry between uses. The grooves allow water to drain away and air to circulate around the soap. The closed cellular structure of White Oak makes it water, weather, and rot-resistant.

  • Made from White Oak locally sourced, milled and handcrafted right here in Ohio
  • A solid piece of White Oak - no glues, stains or preservatives
  • Deep ridges keep natural soap dry between uses
  • White Oak, used in shipbuilding, wine barrels, and whiskey barrels, is very durable and is resistant to decay--unlike pine
  • The high level of tannins in oak also help prevent bacterial growth

A few words about Oak Tannins: Tannins have been used as a natural vegetable dye for centuries. The natural tannins in oak may react with the water or soap and cause the soap deck to darken with use. The natural tannins may also darken the soap or stain light materials. (See "How To Use" below)

Soap Deck Dimensions: 4 in wide x 3.25 in deep x .75 in high

How To Use
Soap Deck Care
  • When ready for a new bar of soap, clean the soap deck under warm water to remove soap residue and allow to air dry.
  • Do not place your wood dish in the dishwasher.
  • Allowing your soap dish to stay submerged in water for an extended period of time is not recommended.
  • If using in the shower, keep it away from the water jet.
  • Grab a nail brush or old toothbrush and some warm water to clean away soap residue in between the ridges.
  • Avoid using harsh cleaning products that will dry out the wood.

Tip: To prevent soap from sticking to any soap dish, place the new bar of soap upright (standing on its long or short end) on the dish.

What Are Tannins

Tannins act as a natural defense mechanism in a tree to protect against pathogens, insects, and fungal infections. They contribute to wood's strength and durability and help repel water, reducing absorption and minimizing damage from moisture. The white oak tree produces high-quality wood with moderate tannin content.

The problem is that the tannin content in every white oak tree will be different depending on the age of the tree and growing conditions, such as soil type, climate, and other environmental factors. Trees that grow farther north tend to have higher tannin content than trees that grow further south.

Tannin levels will also vary within the same tree. For example, higher tannin levels are found in the base of the tree than near the crown and heartwood located close to the sapwood is richer in tannin than the heartwood close to the pith.

Oak Tannins Can Cause Stains: Our natural white oak soap deck have not been sealed and we have no way of knowing which soap decks contain higher tannin levels. When oak comes into contact with water, especially hard water rich in minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium, it can cause the tannins to leach out. These natural tannins can cause the soap deck to darken with use and may also darken the soap.

Please Note: Tannins are water soluble. It is best not to use the oak soap deck in an area where it is continuously soaked with water, like a direct shower flow. We have sold thousands of oak soap decks over the past 20 years. We have been told by a few customers that a wet oak deck can leach dark tannins that can stain certain types of light colored countertop or shower materials.

Reviews

Pretty, functional, but not ideal for humid places

"Unfortunately, I took a bit of a gamble purchasing this and it ended up moldy at the bottom within a month and a half (not taking a star off for that, though, since I knew it might happen), but as long as you aren't living somewhere that's more on the humid side, it's pretty, lightweight, and works well enough! The main downside is that the soap tends to stick to the surface once it's dried again and becomes difficult to pry off. As for any other problems, the one that I purchased did not have the problem of leaking tannins despite frequent use."

Just Get It!

"I've been getting soaps from Chagrin since I was in college, still I always opted out of getting this soap deck. But as we mature our thinking matures LOL. Now a decade removed from college, I finally got this deck and I can't believe I went so long without it. It's functional and practical. I get so tired of losing my soap to the sink and wetness. Spend the little extra cash and save your soaps. You're worth it!"

Nice soap deck

"This is great"

Good one

"Goes well with my adzuki bean bar soap. Looks great. It has not developed any molds yet. The soap sticks to the dish frequently which is the only drawback I would say. But given the material, it is expected."

Soap Deck is the best!

"The quality and durability is fantastic. I really love that it's a solid piece and not open. This keeps the shower clean from drying soap. The wood is good quality! A real bargin at the price!"

Not for me

"This soap dish stuck to my tub. After I removed it from the tub area, a waxy, brown film was left. A scrub brush and gritty cleanser could not remove the film. See pic below for after scrubbing."

Not a Good Product

"The soap deck leaked what I assume is the tannin when in contact with even a little water such as a wet soap bar being set on top of it. More came out early on but it hasn't completely stopped over time either. The brown on the sink luckily does come off with cleaning supplies. The soap deck also developed a crack fairly quickly from the top of one edge toward the middle. It does not look good. I was hoping the reviews that mentioned this problem were unusual cases, but that has not been my experience."

Q&A

What is the best way to clean them? Should i use vinegar or just water? Thank you!
Hi Kevin, Thanks so much for your question! You can simply rinse the soap deck with warm water to get off any soap that is stuck on there! Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns and have a great day! -Christina, Chagrin Valley
Is there anyway to order a longer soap deck to hold multiple bars?
Hi Christina, Thanks so much for reaching out! We only make the one size soap deck at this time but that is a great idea! You can also fit two soap bars on one deck if you set the bars vertically standing up instead of laying flat. This way also allows for better air circulation to the whole bar! Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and have a great day! -Christina, Chagrin Valley
hello! do your shampoo bars fit on here nicely?
Hi There, Thanks for your question! Yes, our soaps and shampoo bars fit perfectly onto our wooden soap decks! They were made with the dimensions of our soap bars in mind :) Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and have a great day! -Christina, Chagrin Valley
Is it true the soap deck is locally Amish made?
Hi There, Thanks so much for your question! Our soap decks are handmade here at Chagrin Valley by Ida's husband, Howard! Thanks again for reaching out and please feel free to contact us with any additional questions!
How long does the soap dish last if you have 2 people taking a shower once a day? It won't be placed where the water hits, but our hands will be wet. Is there anything special we need to do to make it last longer?
Hi There! The soap dish should last you years and years. We have had the same two soap decks in our shower for about 5 years now. While the wood color will darken and change over time, it it solid white oak, the closed cellular structure of White Oak makes it water, weather, and rot resistant. Thanks for asking!
