Help Me Choose: Hair Loss Help

    What Is Hair Loss?

There are many causes of true hair loss, such as genetics, general health, medications, hormonal changes, etc., that no hair care product can reverse.

Natural Organic Herbal ShampooEveryone sheds hair! Our hair grows in a cycle with three distinct stages: active growth, resting, and shedding.

Even a healthy person who is not experiencing excessive hair loss can expect to lose about 100 hairs per day!

The hairs on an adult scalp do not grow or shed in unison. The growing and shedding of hair happen at random, but individual hair follicles do have their own pattern. If all of the hair follicles on your head were on the same schedule, we would all go temporarily bald from time to time as we shed to make room for new hair growth.

As a skin care company we are not trying to treat hair loss, the best we can hope for is to help ease some of the conditions that cause increase shedding.

The natural shampoo bars and other products recommended below are formulated with natural botanicals and essential oils that promote a holistic approach to scalp stimulation which may help ease excessive hair loss.

If hair loss is sudden or patchy, you should talk to your doctor, as it may be a symptom of a larger medical condition.

    Helping with Hair Loss

    WASH WITH A NATURAL SHAMPOO

Wash With a Natural ShampooCheck your current shampoo! Does it contain synthetic detergents like Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS)? These detergents were developed as industrial de-greasers. Our scalp and hair were never meant to be exposed to ingredients like this.

We put a lot of care and research into our recipes, but I often believe that what is not in our natural shampoo bars is even more beneficial, than what is in them.

With all the synthetic ingredients in commercial shampoos, specialty shampoos, and even some handmade shampoos, it is no wonder that so many people have problems with their hair and scalp.

Excess shedding is often the result of simply mistreating your hair! Commercial shampoos are actually made from harsh detergent cleansers, detergent foam boosters, synthetic chemicals, and stabilizers that are tough on the hair and scalp. Harsher shampoo formulas may cause hair to become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.

Often simply switching to a gentle natural shampoo with natural ingredients helps with shedding.

    SCALP MASSAGE

Scalp MassageSome studies have suggested that scalp massage has the potential to stimulate hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles.

An easy way to incorporate a scalp massage into your hair care routine is in the shower after applying shampoo or conditioner,

Spread your fingers, and then place your fingertips on the scalp. Avoid using fingernails which can break hair strands or damage the scalp. Use slow, gentle movements to move fingertips in a circular pattern around the whole head alternating fingertips around different areas of the scalp.

You can do a gentle scalp massage as often as you would like. There are a variety of natural hair care products you can incorporate into a massage routine if you would like.

More Tips to Help Decrease Hair Loss

    NUTRITION

Be sure that you are getting enough protein in your diet from sources like seafood, lean meats, eggs, and legumes. Many believe that fatty acids like omega-3s, available in some seafood and flaxseed, are also important for maintaining healthy hair and scalp.

Some studies have also shown that food high in vitamin A, like leafy greens, carrots, and sweet potatoes may help prolong the active growth stage and thereby promote hair growth.

    AVOID HEATED STYLING TOOLS

Heat is always hard on hair. It causes bonds within the hair strands to fracture, causing brittle hair that breaks and sheds.

Allowing hair to dry naturally is best, but if you need to use a blow dryer use cooler settings.

If possible stay away from hair straightening or curling irons. If you use a heated styling tool, do not leave it on one area of your hair for too long, and keep the heat settings as low as possible to lessen the damage to your hair.

    AVOID CHEMICAL PROCESSING

Many people put tremendous stress on their hair. Over-processing and using harsh chemicals on your scalp and hair like frequent perms, bleaching, dying, or chemical straightening or relaxing can damage the hair follicles and hair shaft, weakening the hair causing dry, brittle, thinning hair and hair loss.

Always try to stick to your natural style and color as closely as possible if you are experiencing hair loss or thinning or the problem will not improve.

    PROPER BRUSHING

Brushing your scalp can help remove dead skin cells, allow natural oils to nourish the scalp and create a healthy environment for hair to grow.

Brushing can help distribute natural hair oils your scalp produces, which adds shine to your strands and keeps them hydrated.

Be gentle, and do not brush hair when wet or tangled to prevent breakage.

Depending on your hair type proper hair brushing, sometimes called "dry brushing" can help condition your hair. If the hair is free from knots and snarls, use full strokes from the scalp to the tips to help to distribute the natural hair oils.

If the hair has knots and snarls then if you start at the scalp and pull hair down to the ends it can result in hair breakage. Begin a few inches from the bottom and slowly work your way up the strand in small sections and short strokes to remove hair tangles. Then you can brush from the scalp to the tips to help to distribute the natural hair oils.

If you have very curly or coarse kinky hair, it often breaks when brushing. Use your fingers to do a scalp massage and then distribute natural oils along the hair length.

Hair that is wet is stretchy and more fragile which can result in snapping and breaking when brushed.

Do research on the internet to find the best brush for your hair type.

TREATING DANDRUFF MAY HELP WITH HAIR LOSS

While dandruff itself is not associated with hair loss, an itchy, inflamed scalp and clogged hair follicles can contribute to excessive shedding and hair loss.

IN SUMMARY: Be Gentle With Your Hair

    • Go as natural as possible: Leave hair its natural color and texture
    • Use a gentle natural shampoo
    • Minimize the use of heated hair styling wands or irons
    • If must dye your hair, try not to go more than one or two shades lighter or darker than your normal color to minimize damage
    • When your hair is wet, use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush
    • If hair is tangled, gently comb hair from the bottom up to avoid any pulling and tugging
    • Very hot showers can decrease natural hair and scalp oils and make hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage
